Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam, also referred to as SP Balasubrahmanyam was a legendary singer, actor, and music director. He worked predominantly in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam films and recorded over 40,000 songs. Balasubrahmanyam won six National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011. A multi-talented person he played character roles in more than 40 Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movies, including Vijay-starrer “Priyamaanavale.”
Balasubrahmanyam was born on 4 June 1946 in a Telugu family. An engineer by profession he chose singing as a career and excelled into it. He made his debut as a playback singer with Telugu movie Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna. His melodious voice soon became popular among the masses and soon he became one of southern cinema’s busiest playback singers. He performed with some of the most well-known music composers including Ilaiyaraaja, KV Mahadevan, Hamsalekha, and AR Rahman.
In 1981, he sang in a Hindi film for the first time, for K Balachander’s Ek Duje Ke Liye. He received National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the same. He was the voice of Salman Khan in blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya which was released in 1989. The soundtrack for the film was very successful and he won a Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song Dil Deewana. He also sang for Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! which became all time hit highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. His duet with Lata Mangeshkar, "Didi Tera Devar Deewana", was very popular.
Fondly called SPB he was revered by fans across age groups and held a Guinness World record for singing over 40,000 songs. In a career spanning over five decades, he won six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and 25 Nandi Awards. SPB was also bestowed with Padma Shri Award in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011.
Illness and Death
Balasubrahmanyam had tested positive for Covid-19 on August 5 and was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai. However, his health deteriorated and he died on 25th September 2020 after a month-long hospitalization. He was 74. His death was mourned by many of his fans and followers.
